The work force reduction is expected to be hardesgt hitin manufacturing, sales and marketingf operations, the Santa Clara-based companhy said. National Semiconductor has about 10,000 employees worldwide. Additionally, National Semiconductor said it wouled sell its InformationApplianced unit, which makes a geode chip, and its cellular baseband businessa unit, which makes chips for cell phones. The work force coupled with the twojettisoned divisions, should save the company about $15 millio n quarterly. The cost to initiate the job cuts andbusinessa sell-off is estimated between $35 million and $45 millionm for the fiscal third quarter ending Feb. 23.
The company has been postingf profits for the past three consecutivrefiscal quarters, but reported a net loss of $37.8 millio n for the quarter ended Feb. 24, 2002. The company had eliminatedf 150 jobs in May 2002 in anearlier cost-cutting
