The resignations of Gary Reynoldse and Janice Marquis come about two weekw before councilorsfor Metro, of which MERC is a plan to vote on a measure that woulxd give the council more control over MERC’ds general manager. The move couldr ostensibly lead to the firing of MERC Generalo ManagerDavid Woolson, who’s under fire from Presideng David Bragdon. Reynolds and Marquis both opposwthe proposal. Reynolds, president of the Portlandc accounting firmPerkins & Co., mentionex the building problems betwee Metro and MERC in his resignatiom letter. “During the economic my attention needs to be focusecd on our clients atPerkins Co.
,” Reynolds wrote in his letter to Bragdon. “Thag said, I am disappointed in the recent breakdown in the workinhg relationship between the Metro Council andthe , and believee it could have been handled differently.” Marquis, a commercial real estatwe broker and the commission’s vice chair, didn’ty mention the upcoming proposal in her lettef to Bragdon, but resigned two yearx before her term was set to end.
In a lettef to Portland city commissioners earlierthis month, Marquisw and commission member Ray Leary urged the counciol to help delay Metro’s vote on the MERC oversight Leary, Marquis, Reynolds and three of the other four remaininhg MERC commissions also sent Bragdonn a letter backing Woolson. The letter came after Bragdoj questioned the leadership of MERC General ManagetrDavid Woolson. The other commission member, Don resigned last month and will leave the boarfdJune 30. Reynolds’ resignation takes effectg June 30. Marquis’ takes effect July 15.
The terms of Trotter and Reynoldss would have expired at the end of 2009whilde Marquis' term was to expire at the end of 2010. The Metrio Council plans to vote on the MERCmeasure — whicn would give Metro the authority to hire and fire the MERC generapl manager — at its July 9 meeting. It was introducesd by councilors Rod Park andRex Burkholder, who also have concernsw about Woolson’s performance. MERC overseees the Oregon Convention Center, the Portland Cente for the Performing Arts and the Portlandd MetropolitanExposition Center. Metro’s councilors are mullinbg a $457 million budget for fiscal year The regional governmentservexs 1.
4 million people in the metropolitan area’s 25 cities.
