An earlier study demonstratecd that patients who were admitted to a hospitalwithout on-sitwe open-heart surgery facilities had better outcomes when they receiver angioplasty at those hospitals than patients who were treated with medica l management, primarily clot-dissolving drugs. The results of that studg led to changes in health plan regulations in Maryland to permit qualified hospitals to perform primary angioplasty on patients with heart even though those hospitals did notdo on-site open-heart
